Review: A Cold Dark Place by HD Hatcher

Meet Author HD Hatcher
A Cold Dark Place
Unloved
One Too Many

On a chance meeting, (at a mutual friend’s house) Luke finds the love of his life. Andy is what Luke has been longing for all of his adult years: the perfect man. But, this perfect man is not only straight—he is married to a woman who is more devilish than Satan himself.

In a bittersweet journey that will change his life forever, Luke must reach deep inside and find the strength he never knew existed. A Cold Dark Place is the story of a man who must pick up the pieces of his broken heart after a lifetime of heartbreak and betrayal.

The Review

After reading this novel I completely understand the cover. Poor Luke is a wreck from start to finish. Luke spends his time lusting after a seemingly straight man who is married to one of the rudest, non-caring, and self-absorbed women I have ever come across. Andy is merely her footstool and she only wants him to keep him miserable.

HD does such a great job telling his story through the eyes of Luke that you forget this is about a gay man wanting what is deemed taboo. You see him as you would any other male seeking love going through the motions of love found, love lost, and looking.

This story broaches on some thought provoking topics all the while with a humorous undertone. I laughed out loud at the internet dating. If you have ever tried it yourself you will completely understand.
A Cold Dark Place has an excellent storyline and great characters which had me glued from start to finish. I would highly recommend this book along with his short, One Too Many.

Blurb for Of Wolves and Men

‘Cowboy’ Charlie Mosby worked on a horse ranch in Heber, Utah. He loved his work, the owners of the ranch, and his co-workers; wranglers who helped tourists with guided horse tours and trail riding all year round.

But after a chance meeting with a handsome gay man who had helped Charlie change a flat tire on Interstate 80 a month ago, Charlie was beginning to wonder about his sexuality. And if that wasn’t confusing enough, strange things were happening on the ranch.

Satanic worship? A strange cult ritual? Whatever it was, it wasn’t good for the owners or the horses on it.
One night Charlie stumbles upon Roman Burk in the woods, naked, bleeding and shivering in the cold. What Charlie never imagined was who -or what- Roman was. Even though the handsome stranger seemed to vanish at times and reappear as if by magic, Charlie was infatuated by this man.

Roman was fearful of revealing his secret. Most of all to a cowboy who was spending more time hunting him, than loving him.

In this shape-shifting story of sexual bonding and discovery, can both Charlie and Roman find what they’re looking for? It’s a question of honor; one that has been up for debate since the first time man set his eyes on this formidable predator. It’s about the mutual respect of Wolves and Men.

Up Close With G.A.

1.          What inspires you as a writer?
Everything and everyone. I get inspiration from situations regarding meeting Mr. Right, or individuals whose character is outstanding or quirky. I also hope to change the prevailing attitude in the world right now that gay marriage is wrong and same sex couples shouldn’t fall in love or be partners.
2.  When did you have that ah ha moment when you knew you were a writer?
I have always written stories for as long as I can recall. But I pursued art instead; painting , sculpting, and drawing to fulfill the creative side of me. Unfortunately fate didn’t have art in mind for me, she decided to give me writing to express myself instead. My Aha! moment came when I actually fell in with a decent publisher.
3.  What is your writing process?
My novels are character driven. I allow my men to decide where and what to do. They already have their story in their minds, I just tell it.
4.  Tell us about your favorite character and why you chose to write about them?
Mark Antonious Richfield. Mark is a fabulously handsome model who is terribly flawed. I suppose Mark is always struggling to come to terms with his life, his past, his aging process. Perhaps there is a little bit of Mark in everyone, and certainly in me. But somehow Mark always manages to survive. He has become a fan favorite, and is in nearly a dozen of my novels, including the Action! Series.
5.  What are you currently working on?
I publish one book a month, so right now I am working on Happy Endings, but that is now a complete rough draft, so I am editing Down and Dirty which will be released in September.
6.  Any upcoming events?
Yes, I have a book signing at Book Soup in LA on August 13th, and I am going to be at the West Hollywood Bookfair on October 1st.

7.  If you could be anyone you like, who would you be?
My fictional character, Steve Miller. After all he gets to be with Mark Richfield.
8.  Do you have any advice for new writers and something that a seasoned vet can learn?
Never give up! Never give up! Never give up! (You get the idea)
9.   Where can your followers find you?

10.              Any last words?

I hope those of you who have never considered reading manlove romance will give one of my novels a try. They range from comedy to drama, and everything in between. I think many people would be surprised that women make up a large part of my readers. Nearly 70%.

Thank you for having me.

From the Mind of HD Hatcher

1. What inspires you as a writer?

I would have to say that life in general has been my inspiration. The people in our lives can either be a healthy compliment to us, or they can be a toxic drain. Trust me, I have witnessed both and some of them are represented in my writing in one form or another.

2.  When did you have that ah ha moment when you knew you were a writer?

My first ah ha moment came when I had the idea for A Cold Dark Place. I would literally wake up from a sound sleep with an idea that I just had to get down on paper.

3.  What is your writing process?

The writing process for me involves turning on my Ipod and drinking an ice cold beer. Sometimes, an idea for a whole chapter can come from a single song. The beer helps relax me and allows my brain to communicate my ideas nearly uncensored.

4.  Tell us about your favorite character and why you chose to write about them?

Andy is my favorite character. I think that we have all wanted someone in our lives that loved us unconditionally and without judgment; someone that cares for us deeply and unconditionally, and will do anything in their power to make sure that we are safe.

5.  What are you currently working on?

I am currently working on two projects (As if I wasn't busy enough). I am currently working on a literary project with the very talented Autumn Prince that I am really excited about. It is a gay themed vampire story set in Charleston SC. As for project #2, this one is a break from the norm for me. I can't give away the details just yet. But, let's just say that it something that may surprise a few folks.

6.  Any upcoming events?

I am sure that by the time this interview is published, the South
Carolina Book Festival will have come and gone. However, (just in case) it will be held Saturday May 14th at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center, Columbia, SC starting at 10 a.m. There is another event that I am really excited about. I collaborated with some very talented writers for the anthology entitled, Unloved by The Author Project.  All of the short stories center around the theme of bullying and suicide. Unloved has made the front cover of the June/July edition of Conversations Magazine thanks to Cyrus Webb. He has been a big supporter of the Author Project and the message that we are sending. All proceeds from Unloved will go to charities in support of Bully Prevention and/or Suicide Prevention.

7.  If you could be anyone you like, who would you be?

If I could be anyone I like, I would be Carrie White. Let's just put it this way, the roads would be a whole lot safer, people would think twice before they annoy me, and I would the "must invite guest" for Bonfires and BBQ(s). The only bad thing, is I would have to keep the fire department on speed dial.

8.  Do you have any advice for new writers and something that a seasoned vet can learn?

10. Any last words?

Let me offer writers this tidbit of advice. Don’t sweat the small stuff.
Everyone is not going to love your style of writing, and not everyone is going to give your book a “stand on their head and clap” review. So be it. But, in the same breath there is someone out there that will. This is who you write for.

Lastly, thank you for having me and giving you the opportunity to tell you a little bit about myself.
